“What Your Pediatrician Doesn’t Know Can Hurt Your Child” by Susan Markel, Pediatrician, on Healing Talk radio show.

This week’s Talk Radio Topic  is “What Your Pediatrician Doesn’t Know Can Hurt Your Child” by Susan Markel, MDon Planetary Streams Talk Radio.

Diana Hoffman

Salem, UT – January 19, 2011 – Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network today announced that Diana Hoffman, Clinical Hypnotherapist,  Trauma Recovery Specialist, and host of  “Healing Talk” radio show, will be interviewing Pediatrician Susan Markel about her new book, What Your Pediatrician Doesn’t Know Can Hurt Your Child” Healing Talk  broadcasts locally every Wednesday on Utah’s KSTAR 1400 AM and globally throughout the following week, starting on Saturday at 11 a.m.  Mountain Time on Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network, and Web Campus World Wide Talk Radio.

According to is Dr. Markel, board-certified pediatrician and private consultant  in parent coaching and child health,  the modern birth experience is probably the best example of how we’ve allowed the mystique of technology to subjugate women’s intuition and inborn abilities.

Throughout history, women gave birth at home without outside interference. It was viewed as a natural life event, not a medical condition.  Unfortunately, standard medical procedures have transformed what is a natural life event into a series of interventions that are potentially harmful to your baby. And while you may elect to go through with some of these procedures, its important to know what they are, and whether they are really necessary, and whether they can be appropriately postponed to accommodate an emotionally safe birth and bonding experience for the baby. Dr. Markel advises women “You have a choice—even about hospital procedures. Trust your instincts, and trust that you know what’s best for your child.”

Dr. Markel’s book gives guidelines in several other areas that affect the development of deep trust and effective bonding between mother and child.   Some of the book chapters include:  Breastfeeding; Nutrition; Keeping Baby Close=Carrying and Shared Sleep;  Natural Healing; Communication –Learning to Talk & Learning to Listen; and Discipline—Treat Me Like I’m Someone You Love.”   Dr. Markel offers practical strategies strategies to increase nurturing and family closeness, enhance positive identity in children, and maintain effective structure and boundaries without damaging relationships.

Talk About “Juveniles at risk: trauma, delinquency and how to repair” on Healing Talk radio show.

Trauma Recovery Specialist

This week’s Talk Radio Topic  is “Juveniles at risk: trauma, delinquency and how to repair.” on Planetary Streams Talk Radio.

Salem, UT – January 15, 2011 – Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network today announced that Diana Hoffman, Clinical Hypnotherapist,  Trauma Recovery Specialist, and host of  “Healing Talk” radio show, will be joined by Adolescent psychologist Dr. Madolyne  Liebing.   They will be discussing “Adolescent Trauma, Delinquency and Treatment Possibilities.”   Healing Talk  broadcasts locally every Wednesday on Utah’s KSTAR 1400 AM and globally throughout the following week, starting on Saturday at 11 a.m.  Mountain Time on Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network, and Web Campus World Wide Talk Radio.

According to Diana Hoffman, Licensed Professional Counselor, Trauma Recovery Specialist, and owner of Salem Counseling Center, statistic s show that around ten percent of teenagers account for 75% of delinquent and criminal behavior.  Within this “delinquent” group,  the incidence of trauma and abuse history is quite high

Child abuse, typically the most damaging type of trauma, is a potent predictor of delinquency.  One  study in the state of Washington found that children who had been maltreated were 4.8 times as likely to be arrested during adolescence, and 11 times as likely to be arrested for a violent crime as a juvenile, compared to the control group.  Conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder, substance abuse and as a variety of other mental and behavioral disorders in teenagers are similarly linked to unresolved trauma.

Girls are even more vulnerable to trauma, and when abused tend to commit illegal behaviors that bring them into the juvenile justice system.   Unfortunately many facilities with a “tough” or punitive structure retraumatize or revictimize girls (and boys) who have already been abused—creating trauma intense enough to drive an escalation in suicide attempts and self-harming behaviors.

Dr. Liebing will share information on treatment programs and therapy approaches that are firm, but respectful and effective for delinquent youth and traumatized youth.

Talk About “Recovering From Phobias and Fear Associations” on “Healing Talk” radio show.

Diana Hoffman, host of Healing Talk radio show on KSTAR 1400 AM

This week’s Talk Radio Topic is “Recovering From Phobias and Fear Associations.” on Planetary Streams Talk Radio

Salem, UT – December 29, 2010 – Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network today announced that Diana Hoffman, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Trauma Recovery Specialist, and host of “Healing Talk” radio show, will be discussing “Recovering From Phobias and Fear Associations.” Healing Talk broadcasts locally every Wednesday on Utah’s KSTAR 1400 AM and globally throughout the following week, starting on Saturday at 11 a.m. Mountain Time on Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network, and Web Campus World Wide Talk Radio.

According to Diana Hoffman, LPC, Trauma Recovery Specialist, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Mind/Body Healing Coach, and owner of Salem Counseling Center, phobias are created by rapid association mechanisms in the brainstem. All sensory input comes into the brain through the brainstem, and the brainstem acts as a huge filtering system, stopping all of the mundane input and forwarding only that sensory information that is unique, changing, or is tied to strong emotional associations in the past. This keeps the conscious mind uncluttered and allows it to focus on what is more important.
In contrast, sensory input that is similar to something in the past that has caused a strong emotion is immediately forwarded. Such sensory input often creates an instantaneous physiological response in the brainstem itself. Such a response happens with reflex speed, before the conscious mind has a chance to react.
The most intense brainstem responses occur when a strong fear association is triggered. Fear emotions tend to be interpreted by the brainstem as essential to survival. Thus the unconscious reflex response is very intense, very physical and very rapid. Because this response happens at such a deep and primitive brain level, and happens before a sensation is consciously noticed, fear responses feel innate and unchangeable to an individual, even if they are irrational. Often fears are so strong that an individual with a phobia is afraid of even attempting therapy. Thus, the most difficult part of phobia recovery is just convincing an individual that recovery is actually possible.

Brainstem-based release techniques such as EFT, TFT, and EMDR are remarkably effective at releasing phobia associations. With phobias caused by single-event trauma, this release is so impressive that it is often chosen for stage demonstrations in lectures and presentations, with such dramatic effect that lifetime severe phobias can frequently be resolved in one or two sessions. Activating the brainstem by getting it “busy” with sensory input, bilateral stimulation and association trigger words opens up access to the trauma associations and allows them to be “reprogrammed” with speed and permanence.

False fear associations can also be reprogrammed. For example, a common abuse association is “a man abused me as a child so I must be afraid my husband, doctor, etc. because he is a man.” Often a simple sequence of brain-stem based therapy can change this association into “abusive men are dangerous, but my husband/doctor is safe.” This change can be effected long before the work of resolving all of the abuse trauma is completed. It is not a cognitive therapy process of changing beliefs; cognitive therapy approaches are much slower. This is a brain-stem-based process of changing the synaptic connections between neurons, and it is very physical, involving tapping, eye movement, and even breathing exercises. The effect produced by these approaches can create tremendous relief for those burdened by phobias and fear associations.
