Talk About “Recovering From Phobias and Fear Associations” on “Healing Talk” radio show.

Diana Hoffman, host of Healing Talk radio show on KSTAR 1400 AM

This week’s Talk Radio Topic is “Recovering From Phobias and Fear Associations.” on Planetary Streams Talk Radio

Salem, UT – December 29, 2010 – Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network today announced that Diana Hoffman, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Trauma Recovery Specialist, and host of “Healing Talk” radio show, will be discussing “Recovering From Phobias and Fear Associations.” Healing Talk broadcasts locally every Wednesday on Utah’s KSTAR 1400 AM and globally throughout the following week, starting on Saturday at 11 a.m. Mountain Time on Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network, and Web Campus World Wide Talk Radio.

According to Diana Hoffman, LPC, Trauma Recovery Specialist, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Mind/Body Healing Coach, and owner of Salem Counseling Center, phobias are created by rapid association mechanisms in the brainstem. All sensory input comes into the brain through the brainstem, and the brainstem acts as a huge filtering system, stopping all of the mundane input and forwarding only that sensory information that is unique, changing, or is tied to strong emotional associations in the past. This keeps the conscious mind uncluttered and allows it to focus on what is more important.
In contrast, sensory input that is similar to something in the past that has caused a strong emotion is immediately forwarded. Such sensory input often creates an instantaneous physiological response in the brainstem itself. Such a response happens with reflex speed, before the conscious mind has a chance to react.
The most intense brainstem responses occur when a strong fear association is triggered. Fear emotions tend to be interpreted by the brainstem as essential to survival. Thus the unconscious reflex response is very intense, very physical and very rapid. Because this response happens at such a deep and primitive brain level, and happens before a sensation is consciously noticed, fear responses feel innate and unchangeable to an individual, even if they are irrational. Often fears are so strong that an individual with a phobia is afraid of even attempting therapy. Thus, the most difficult part of phobia recovery is just convincing an individual that recovery is actually possible.

Brainstem-based release techniques such as EFT, TFT, and EMDR are remarkably effective at releasing phobia associations. With phobias caused by single-event trauma, this release is so impressive that it is often chosen for stage demonstrations in lectures and presentations, with such dramatic effect that lifetime severe phobias can frequently be resolved in one or two sessions. Activating the brainstem by getting it “busy” with sensory input, bilateral stimulation and association trigger words opens up access to the trauma associations and allows them to be “reprogrammed” with speed and permanence.

False fear associations can also be reprogrammed. For example, a common abuse association is “a man abused me as a child so I must be afraid my husband, doctor, etc. because he is a man.” Often a simple sequence of brain-stem based therapy can change this association into “abusive men are dangerous, but my husband/doctor is safe.” This change can be effected long before the work of resolving all of the abuse trauma is completed. It is not a cognitive therapy process of changing beliefs; cognitive therapy approaches are much slower. This is a brain-stem-based process of changing the synaptic connections between neurons, and it is very physical, involving tapping, eye movement, and even breathing exercises. The effect produced by these approaches can create tremendous relief for those burdened by phobias and fear associations.

Talk About “Recognizing Trauma Symptoms in Children” on “Healing Talk” radio show.

This week’s Talk Radio Topic  is “Recognizing Trauma Symptoms in Children” on Planetary Streams Talk Radio.

diana_hoffman.small.jpg

Salem, UT – December 8, 2010 – Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network today announced that Diana Hoffman, Clinical Hypnotherapist,  Trauma Recovery Specialist, and host of  “Healing Talk” radio show, will be discussing “Recognizing Trauma Symptoms in Children.”   Healing Talk  broadcasts locally every Wednesday on Utah’s KSTAR 1400 AM and globally throughout the following week, starting on Saturday at 11 a.m.  Mountain Time on Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network, and Web Campus World Wide Talk Radio.

According to Diana Hoffman, LPC, Trauma Recovery Specialist, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Mind/Body Healing Coach, and owner of Salem Counseling Center, Children are frequently impacted by trauma. The Ace Studies indicate that over 50 percent of today’s adults have unresolved trauma from their childhood. And today’s children have an even higher rate of trauma than the previous generation. Current estimates suggest that 33 percent for girls and 20 percent of boys experience sexual abuse trauma. Fifty percent of children experience divorce.   In addition, trauma symptoms and trauma freeze states are often seen in children who have experienced medical procedures and surgeries, accidents, death of a family member or pet, disasters, witnessing violence, physical or emotional abuse, bullying or gang terrorization, and other stressors.

Unresolved trauma directly impacts the brain stem, the lower brain structures, and the limbic system of the brain. These effects do not just go away with time. If not resolved, they can have a serious long-term impact. This is demonstrated by the ACE studies, which show that unresolved childhood trauma impacts adult health problems, relationship problems and addictions 50 years after the trauma occurred.

Children experiencing trauma freeze states may seem lethargic. They are likely to be unable to concentrate or focus, and are frequently misdiagnosed as having attention deficit disorder. They are likely to have anger outbursts that seem unrelated to the present, or are too intense to be explained by current events. Children with trauma may be easily overstressed, and when stressed their blood pressure can drop suddenly, producing paleness, sweating, or even fainting. Trauma freeze states are closely tied to shock, can be medically dangerous, and can occur suddenly without physical injury.  Understanding trauma freeze states and trauma symptoms is essential for teachers, parents, coaches, health care providers, and anyone who works with children.

Join us on December 8 as we discuss the signs that indicate trauma states in children, and learn more about how to resolve them. This program will broadcast live on KSTAR 1400 AM in Utah and Salt Lake Valley. It will stream daily on internet radio starting Saturday, December 11 on Web Campus World Wide Radio, Planetary Streams Talk Radio, and Shoutcast. Tips for Marital Happiness through the Holidays on “Healing Talk” radio show.

Talk About Tips for Marital Happiness through the Holidays on  “Healing Talk” radio show.

diana_hoffman.small.jpg

This week’s Talk Radio Topic  is “Tips for Marital Happiness through the Holidays” on Planetary Streams Talk Radio
Salem, UT – December 1, 2010 – Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network today announced that Diana Hoffman, Trauma Recovery Specialist, Owner of the Salem Counseling Center and host of  “Healing Talk” radio show, will be joined by guest Merilee Van Wagenen, LCSW, who will share “Tips for Marital Happiness Through the Holidays. ” on December 1.   Healing Talk with Diana Hoffman, broadcasts locally every Wednesday on Utah’s KSTAR 1400 AM and globally throughout the following week, starting on Saturday at 11 a.m.  Mountain Time on Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network, and Web Campus World Wide Talk Radio.
According to Merilee Vanwagenen, Licensed Clinical Social worker and a former trainer and presenter for the Arbinger Institute, some common pitfalls in marriage can be avoided if partners adjust some very common–and mistaken paradigms.  For example, research indicates that an individual who is in love, or recently married experiences a very high level of the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine.   This brain state creates a euphoria that may last up to a year.   In this state spouses feel that they have found ultimate happiness and that all their emotional pain is over.    They feel as if they can overcome any obstacle together, and will surely never be like those “other” married people who have problems.  This state of bliss lasts for a few months to a year.    After that, it becomes essential that the marriage be based on a level of deep commitment and unselfishness if it is to continue.
Because of this state of euphoria, individuals often think that their love for each other will ease all of their unresolved pain and insecurities.    As the brain chemicals return to normal levels, some individuals begin to think “I don’t feel those wonderful feelings any more.  My pain is coming back.   My spouse isn’t trying hard enough to ease my pain.   He or she must not love me enough.   Or maybe we are falling out of love.”  Its important that individuals take accountability for their own feelings, and don’t look to their spouse as someone to “fix” them or guarantee their happiness.
In our culture an individual is also likely to idealize their partner, and believe the partner will think the same and make the same choices in a situation that the individual would make.  This type of assumption leads to conflict. Marriage ideally becomes a journey of discovery if spouses recognize that each member of the partnership is a distinct and unique individual, with a background, perspective and thinking approach that differs from that of their spouse.
