This week’s Talk Radio Topic  is “Juveniles at risk: trauma, delinquency and how to repair.” on Planetary Streams Talk Radio.

Salem, UT – January 15, 2011 – Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network today announced that Diana Hoffman, Clinical Hypnotherapist,  Trauma Recovery Specialist, and host of  “Healing Talk” radio show, will be joined by Adolescent psychologist Dr. Madolyne  Liebing.   They will be discussing “Adolescent Trauma, Delinquency and Treatment Possibilities.”   Healing Talk  broadcasts locally every Wednesday on Utah’s KSTAR 1400 AM and globally throughout the following week, starting on Saturday at 11 a.m.  Mountain Time on Planetary Streams Talk Radio Network, and Web Campus World Wide Talk Radio.

According to Diana Hoffman, Licensed Professional Counselor, Trauma Recovery Specialist, and owner of Salem Counseling Center, statistic s show that around ten percent of teenagers account for 75% of delinquent and criminal behavior.  Within this “delinquent” group,  the incidence of trauma and abuse history is quite high

Child abuse, typically the most damaging type of trauma, is a potent predictor of delinquency.  One  study in the state of Washington found that children who had been maltreated were 4.8 times as likely to be arrested during adolescence, and 11 times as likely to be arrested for a violent crime as a juvenile, compared to the control group.  Conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder, substance abuse and as a variety of other mental and behavioral disorders in teenagers are similarly linked to unresolved trauma.

Girls are even more vulnerable to trauma, and when abused tend to commit illegal behaviors that bring them into the juvenile justice system.   Unfortunately many facilities with a “tough” or punitive structure retraumatize or revictimize girls (and boys) who have already been abused—creating trauma intense enough to drive an escalation in suicide attempts and self-harming behaviors.

Dr. Liebing will share information on treatment programs and therapy approaches that are firm, but respectful and effective for delinquent youth and traumatized youth.
